Nobody will ever accuse Come’s Thalia Zedek of having a pretty voice. More than one person I played their music for had the same comment: “This dude sings terrible.”
Thalia, of course, isn’t a dude at all. Her ragged, raging voice can be a harrowing experience—but a thoroughly engrossing one, all the same. Very few vocalists could sing “Let’s Get Lost” and make you feel like they mean it. I’m guessing Zedek would despise this comparison, but “Hurricane” feels to me like an alt-rock “Layla,” starting out charged and pleading before growing lyrical at the end (or at least as lyrical as she can get).
Come’s punishing, apocalyptic blues-punk-rock sludge is some flat-out powerful shit. Massive, at times brilliant.
Enjoy.
Bonus!—Thalia Zedek
