Nobody seems to like Wolfgang Press’s Queer except me and the friend of mine who lent me the CD back in the day. I soon bought my own copy. It was an unexpected treat, a great fusion of snide counterculture angst and electro-funky dance grooves that revealed its charms the more you listened. The emphasis on rhythm and use of strategic samples show the clear influence of hip-hop.

Neither their earlier post-punk stuff nor their subsequent dance-rock output seem to have the same spark; yet for one disc, at least, the Wolfgang Press were terrific.

Here’s a 30-minute condensation of Queer. Good stuff.
