Nick Lowe is perhaps best known for his work as a producer; his extensive production discography includes a handful of Elvis Costello’s most acclaimed albums, some of Graham Parker’s most well-known discs, and albums by Dr. Feelgood, Wreckless Eric, the Damned, and more. His most famous song, “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding,” is best known as a hit for someone else, Elvis Costello. He was a founding member of the early pub-rock band Brinsley Schwarz and was a member of Rockpile with Dave Edmunds. (Many of Lowe and Edmunds’ late-‘70s albums were solo efforts in name only, being effectively Rockpile albums.)
Yet Nick Lowe’s work under his own name deserves a close look. An excellent singer-songwriter, his music falls into the pub rock / power pop range of classic new wave.
Here’s a CD-length taste of prime Nick Lowe. Textbook songcraft, lyrics always graced with a hint of humor.
Enjoy.
