Like Jackie McLean, pianist Andrew Hill is yet another of those second-tier artists in the upper echelon of ‘60s jazz greats. Not quite at the same level as Coleman, Coltrane, Davis, or Mingus, but excellent nonetheless.
This playlist includes highlights from three of his best albums, beginning and ending with the brilliant Black Fire (1963) and Point of Departure (1965); the quite solid Judgment! (1964) is sandwiched in between.
Dig it.
