Some consider Amon Düül the first Krautrock band, and they may indeed be the first German rock band to make waves internationally—but the music they create doesn’t fit exactly with that of their Krautrock brethren. Their music is more monumental, more prog-rock in structure, more psychedelic and space-rock in its flow, and more flat-out rocking in general than other bands than fall under the Krautrock label. They rage and sway and morph into quieter interludes with ease, creating a lush, turbulent, truly immersive musical experience.

This playlist focuses on their first three brilliant albums, Phallus Dei, Yeti, and Tanz Der Lemminge. Check it out.

Playlist Note: The selections I made for my original playlist in iTunes are not reflected entirely accurately here. There must be different releases of the CDs—on my version of Yeti, the song suite “Soap Shop Rock” is presented as one track; in Spotify, the segments are broken out as different tracks (“Burning Sister,” “Halluzination Guillotine,” “Gulp a Sonata,” and “Flesh-Coloured Anti-Aircraft Alarm”). That’s no problem—I just selected all the tracks.

But my version of Tanz der Lemminge has each side broken into separate tracks. I had selected all of side one (the four-part “Syntelman’s March of the Roaring Seventies” suite) for inclusion, but only a few selections from side two; my three original selections from the “Restless Skylight-Transistor-Child” suite were “A Short Stop at the Transylvanian Brain-Surgery,” “Race from Here to Your Ears (a) Little Tornadoes,” and “Race from Here to Your Ears (c) The Flyweighted Five,” all of which totaled about nine minutes. I include the entire 19-minute side available in Spotify. Hence the longer than usual playing time for the playlist.
