First Eric Clapton, then Jeff Beck, then Jimmy Page—The Yardbirds are a band known first and foremost for the string of great guitarists who began their careers with the band. What they weren’t well-known for was their music itself, at least not during my classic-rock-radio-listening teenage years. American radio stations played just a few cuts—“For Your Love,” “Heart Full of Soul,” their version of “I’m a Man,” and not much more.

But the Yardbirds were groundbreaking throughout their short lifespan, most notably in the explorations of blues-tinged psychedelic rock—a year ahead of just about everyone else—on their only proper UK album release Roger the Engineer (repacked in the U.S. as Over Under Sideways Down).

U.S. classic rock fans—check them out!
