With its gorgeous melodies, crunching guitar hooks, and well-crafted power pop, the music of Matthew Sweet can be incredibly infectious.
Here are two endearingly addictive playlists of prime Matthew Sweet.
Playlist 1
Girlfriend (1991) is one of rock’s great breakup albums, and a terrific power-pop guitar album as well. With NYC punk/new wave veterans Richard Lloyd and Robert Quine in the fold, the guitar hooks crunch just right, and the solos absolutely crank. It’s an essential ‘90s listen. Here’s a traditional LP-length condensed version of Girlfriend.
Playlist 2
Follow-up Altered Beast (1993) was criticized for being stylistically all over the place, but I’d say its biggest flaw was less strong material. 100% Fun (1995), on the other hand, was just that. Here’s a blend of those two albums. Lloyd and Quine are on board for both, for a similar musical mastery.
