The Screaming Trees were among the bands that pioneered the grunge-rock movement that emerged from Seattle and the American Pacific Northwest. They may never have had the commercial success of many of their peers, yet they released at least once magnificent album, Sweet Oblivion (1992) and launched the career of vocalist Mark Lanegan, one of the most captivating voices of his generation.
Whereas many of their grunge-mates took many of their musical cues from early metal acts like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, fusing them with the energy and rebellions spirit of punk rock, the Screaming Trees seemed more inspired by garage and psychedelic rock, with the swirling guitars of Gary Lee Connor dominating the mix. Vocalist Mark Lanegan’s soulful, husky voice sounds just perfect atop all that glorious noise. Powerful stuff.
