L7 was one of several all- or predominantly female bands to come to prominence in the ‘90s, the first decade women were allowed to be anything more than fringe figures in the male-dominated world of rock and roll.
Sounding like the Runaways might have if they were as bad-ass as they promised to be, L7 delivers blast upon blast of punk-metal-pop, full of sass and swagger. Their songs are catchy as hell, and the band just tears it up: the hooks fly and the riffs pound and choruses are shouted out in unison. Fabulous.
Here’s a taste of L7, culled from their best album, Smell the Magic (released 1990 as an EP and 1991 as an LP), and their most acclaimed, Bricks Are Heavy (1992).
