Some might choose to call John Prine a folkie, simply because he’s so obviously one of those most odious of creatures, a dirty stinkin’ liberal. (Pinkos and commies and liberals—Oh, my!)

But I’d say Prine is best described as a country music singer-songwriter, and a damned good one, too. He’s not too well known these days, I fear, but he’s worth knowing, one of the finest songwriters of the ‘70s. His 1971 self-titled debut is a hands-down classic.

Here are two playlists of classic Prine. Enjoy.

Playlist 1

Playlist One gives a mix of Prine’s more upbeat and/or humorous numbers. It’s probably the best introduction to his work, and it contains most of my absolute favorites, from “Illegal Smile” to “Dear Abby” and beyond. Great stuff here.

Playlist 2

Playlist Two contains some slower and more serious numbers—although a John Prine song is never too far away from humor and irony. Plenty of great stuff here, too, starting from the first song, “Hello in There,” to my knowledge one of the finest songs about the elderly ever recorded.
