After first working up his chops in the UK pub rock act Kilburn and the High Roads, which disbanded after a single album release, Ian Dury set off to form a new band, Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Writing his songs alongside guitarist and pianist Chaz Jankel, Dury hit upon a winning schtick: a foundation of rock and roll drizzled with punk attitude, a heavy pour of disco, and a shot of music hall-style sensibilities, all bound together by Dury’s ironic sense of humor and delivered in his casual cockney accent.
The work of Ian Dury and the Blockheads must be heard to be believed, and once heard it cannot be forgotten. It’s some of the most amusing music in rock history, not to be missed.
Here’s a tasty sampling. Crank it up.
