What started as one of the UK’s premier blues-rock bands became a US/UK pop sensation. Fleetwood Mac should need little introduction, so let’s dive in.
Playlist 1
When the remnants of the original Fleetwood Mac (Mick Fleetwood, plus John and Christine McVie), paired up with the American singer-songwriting duo of Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks on New Year’s Eve of 1974, the result was pure pop magic. This playlist compiles highlights from their three first albums together, Fleetwood Mac (1975), Rumours (1977), and the double-LP Tusk (1979).
Playlist 2
Some attention, of course, should be given to the original incarnation of Fleetwood Mac, featuring bluesman Peter Green. So we’ll go back in time a few years (to 1968-1970) for the second playlist. “Black Magic Woman,” a Green original, was later made famous by Santana.
Playlist 3
The Lindsay Buckingham songs from Tusk are an accomplishment in their own right, and are best heard separately from the rest of the album. This playlist includes all but one of the Buckingham tracks from that album. I love the Fleetwood Mac pop stuff, but these raggedly eccentric songs might be the 23 minutes of Fleetwood Mac that has stuck with me the most over the years. They fit perfectly on half a 46-minute tape, which spent much time in my car’s tape deck back in the day.
