Playlist Notes:
A few of the albums and singles I selected to represent 1970 were not available on Spotify:
- John Phillips’ album John Phillips (John, the Wolf King of L.A.) does not appear to be available on Spotify. My selections are “Down the Beach,” “Mississippi,” and “Drum.”
- The song “Give Me Just A Little More Time” by the Chairmen of the Board does not appear to be available on Spotify.
- The album A Beard of Stars by Tyrannosaurus Rex appears greyed out and unplayable on Spotify. My selections are “By the Light of the Magical Moon,” “Elemental Child,” and “Lofty Skies.”
- At the time of writing this post, the work of Joni Mitchell is not available on Spotify. From Ladies of the Canyon (1970), my selections are “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Conversation,” and “Woodstock.”
- The classic 3-LP, multi-artist Woodstock: Music from the Original Soundtrack and More does not appear to be available on Spotify. My selections are Richie Havens’ “Freedom,” Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice,” John B. Sebastian’s “I Had A Dream,” Joe Cocker’s “With A Little Help From My Friends,” Country Joe MacDonald’s “I Feel Like I’m Fixin To Die Rag,” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Star Spangled Banner, Purple Haze.”
- The song “Ohio” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is currently unavailable on Spotify.
- The album Monkey Man by Toots & The Maytals does not appear to be available on Spotify. I found two tracks on other releases, but not the super-catchy “Revival Reggae.”
- The album Historic Performances Recorded at the Monterey International Pop Festival by The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Otis Redding does not appear to be available on Spotify. I found the tracks on the more recent releases of the artists’ individual performances.
- Jorge Ben’s Força Bruta (1970) does not appear to be available on Spotify. My selections are “Oba, Lá Vem Ela,” “Apareceu Aparecida,” and “Mulher Brasileira.”
- The album Déjà Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is currently unavailable on Spotify. My selections are “Woodstock,” “Helpless,” and “Carry On.”
- As of the writing of this post, Neil Young’s catalog is not available on Spotify. From After the Gold Rush, my selections are “After the Gold Rush,” “Southern Man,” and “I Believe in You.”
- Stephen Stills’ self-titled debut album does not appear to be available on Spotify. My selections are “Sit Yourself Down,” “Church (A Part of Someone),” and “Black Queen.” [Update: The album now appears to be available. Playlists updated.]
It is unfortunate that as of the time of this post, works by Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Stephen Stills, and other artists are not available (or appear greyed out, unplayable) in Spotify, due to a conflict over political and cultural misinformation spread by far-right podcaster Joe Rogan on Spotify. I hope this issue can be resolved soon!
