The British folk scene received a pleasant jolt in the late ‘60s with the arrival of Fairport Convention, known primarily for the spellbinding voice of Sandy Denny, whose tenure in the band was relatively brief, and the guitar work of Richard Thompson, also notable for his subsequent solo career.
I first heard both of them elsewhere, Denny with her guest spot on Led Zeppelin’s “The Battle of Evermore” and Thompson from his work with his then-wife Linda on the albums I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight and Shoot Out the Lights. But they both first came to prominence in Fairport Convention.
The band started off with an American folk-rock influence, later shifting towards a more traditional British folk sound, a progression that can be seen on this playlist, which features highlights from their three 1969 albums with Sandy Denny in the group, What We Did on Our Holidays, Unhalfbricking, and Leige & Lief. Enjoy.
