Pink Floyd needs little introduction, so let’s dive in.
Playlist 1: Syd Barrett’s Psychedelic Sounds
Playlist one compiles highlights from Pink Floyd’s 1960s albums—including their first two albums, which featured Syd Barrett. The best of their work from this period seems to my ears to have an early space-rock feel. (I’ll take a pass on the songs about gnomes, though.) This is the same time period covered by the compilation Relics, almost all of which is included here. Honestly, this playlist feels stronger, more complete. Enjoy.
Playlist Two and Beyond:
When I get to the ‘70s, I’ll add more playlists, so keep an eye out.
Also keep an eye out for a Syd Barret Artist Spotlight, coming even sooner. [Update: Here it is!]
Update: The ‘70s
Updated 2023/05/09
Here are four more playlists of Pink Floyd, the last three of which cover their most essential work. Their innovative yet accessible art-rock forms a vital part of the classic rock landscape.
Enjoy!
Playlist 2: Transition
Easily the least essential of my Pink Floyd playlists, this mix still has some worthwhile stuff. It chronicles the transitional period between the psychedelic sounds of their early years and their art-rock / classic rock peak, focusing mostly on Meddle and tacking on a few live tracks at the end from Ummagumma.
Playlist 3
The Dark Side of the Moon, in its entirety.
Playlist 4
Playlist 4 merges Wish You Were Here with Animals, two of their better albums.
Playlist 5
Playlist 5 is a condensed version of their 2LP concept album The Wall.
