The Red Krayola was unappreciated in their day, but they certainly wouldn’t sound out of place in a slacker mix of ‘90s alt-rock. They released two albums in the late ‘60s, and I’ll be damned if the better of them, God Bless the Red Krayola and All Who Sail with It, doesn’t sound like early Pavement demos (or at the very least like Stephen Malkmus’ solo work). Their debut, The Parable of Arable Land, sounds a little more chaotic, a bit like the 13th Floor Elevators if they were schooled in free jazz improvisation and avant-garde classical atonality.
This playlist sandwiches a few of the better tracks from their debut between healthy stretches from their sophomore release.
