The best of the Stooges’ music is absolutely essential listening for anyone with even a casual interest in alternative rock. The songs crackle with a primitive energy that reveals a combination of dissatisfaction and self-hatred that were unique in music at the time. Just about every track on the Stooges self-titled debut is a prototype for loud, catchy, self-deprecating punk.  They would only get more frenzied for their next album, Funhouse, and more rocking for the subsequent Raw Power.  For those who could stomach them, they were a guiding light into a darkness that only the Velvet Underground had hinted at.

Diehard fans of the Stooges and Iggy Pop will no doubt point to some egregious omissions here (“TV Eye,” anyone?). But for most of us, this playlist will serve as an excellent introduction and/or career summary.
