The Animals were best known for their blues-rock renditions of other people’s songs, rather than their own material. Perhaps for this reason they aren’t listened to much these days. But their best work was gritty and powerful, with singer Eric Burdon’s deep voice capable of a menace unlike any other of its time. Their artistic peak came with two 1966 albums, most notably the UK release Animalisms (with an –s), but also the similarly titled (but completely different) US release Animalism (not available on Spotify, it seems).
